EU Spends Huge Sums of Money to Develop Hydrogen Fuel Vehicles

The European Commission passed legislative proposals on the development of hydrogen fuel vehicles on the 10th. The EU and private companies will each invest 470 million euros to develop hydrogen fuel vehicles in the next six years.

The European Commission said in a communiqué issued on the same day that there are two reasons for proposing the development of hydrogen fuel vehicles: on the one hand, some hydrogen fuel vehicle technologies are now mature and can be launched on the market; on the other hand, the development of hydrogen fuel technology can be accelerated. development, it is expected to reach the commercial take-off stage from 2010 to 2020.

The European Commission hopes to include hydrogen fuel vehicles in the EU's approved models as soon as possible to facilitate production and sales. The European Commission believes that due to the high flammability of hydrogen, the key to including hydrogen fuel vehicles in EU-approved models is to formulate safety standards for automotive hydrogen fuel storage equipment.

European Commission Vice President Verhoigan pointed out: "Bringing hydrogen fuel vehicles to the market can reduce Europe's dependence on fossil fuels and make Europe's air cleaner. Developing common safety standards for such vehicles will not only ensure the safety of citizens , and can also improve the competitiveness of manufacturers.”

Hydrogen fuel vehicles use hydrogen as the main energy source. Compared with gasoline and diesel, the use of hydrogen fuel can greatly reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases and other harmful gases. Many large international automobile manufacturers have invested heavily in the development of hydrogen fuel vehicles.

Hydrogen has a wider source and can be produced by electrolysis from water, and is almost unlimited. The extraction, storage, and transportation of hydrogen are not problems, but due to the lack of large-scale promotion, the cost of hydrogen is currently quite expensive. For the same mileage, hydrogen energy will cost more money, but this situation will continue to grow as hydrogen energy Improved by the promotion of automobiles.

In 2006, the “Demonstration Hydrogen Fuel Car Development Project” independently developed by Jiangsu Zhenjiang Jiangkui Technology Co., Ltd., Tsinghua University, and Chery Automobile passed the review of the national expert group. The successful development of China's first hydrogen fuel-powered car with completely independent intellectual property rights marks that China's hydrogen power technology has reached the internationally leading level.

It is understood that the cost of hydrogen fuel engines is only 10% higher than traditional ones. Hydrogen can be burned as long as limited changes are made to the structure of traditional internal combustion engines. Moreover, existing vehicle engine production equipment, facilities and production capacity can be fully utilized, and the market application prospects broad.

In fact, BMW began to study the feasibility of hydrogen as a new energy source more than 100 years ago.

At the 2000 World Expo, BMW became the first automaker in the world to display a fleet of hydrogen-powered vehicles. At that time, the BMW 750hL hydrogen-powered car had already verified its advantages under actual test conditions, clearly and brilliantly proving the feasibility of this technology. In 2006, the BMW Hydrogen 7 Series using a hydrogen fuel engine was officially launched and a small-scale production of 100 units was achieved. This is the world's first hydrogen-powered luxury high-performance engine for daily use.

On September 2, 2007, at the 3rd China Jilin Northeast Asia Investment and Trade Expo, the first hydrogen fuel hybrid battery vehicle newly developed by Toyota Corporation of Japan was unveiled.

According to Toyota, this car is a hybrid battery car using hydrogen as the main fuel and will achieve true zero pollution emissions. The principle of the hydrogen fuel cell is to input hydrogen into the battery for combustion to generate electricity. The hydrogen and oxidation are combined into water, and finally it is discharged as pure water mist. The emergence of hydrogen fuel hybrid battery vehicles will not only bid farewell to internal combustion engines, but even traditional automobile gearboxes will become history.
