The European Union and Japan signed a
cooperation agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy on the 27th. This
is another new cooperation agreement signed between the three major nuclear
energy development countries and groups after Japan and the United States, and
Euratom and the United States signed similar agreements.
Negotiations between the EU and Japan on
the peaceful use of nuclear energy began in 1998. The agreement signed by the
two parties on the 27th is valid for 30 years. According to this agreement, the
EU and Japan will strengthen cooperation in the fields of nuclear technology,
nuclear power plants, nuclear safety, radioactive protection and nuclear fuel
processing. In addition, the two sides also agreed to sign another cooperation
agreement on nuclear research soon.
The European Commission said in a press
release issued after the signing of the agreement that the signing of this
agreement opened a new chapter for cooperation between the EU and Japan in the
field of nuclear energy. In the future, the cooperation between the two parties
will continue to strictly abide by international treaties on nuclear
non-proliferation and other issues, and ensure transparency in the use of
sensitive nuclear materials such as plutonium.
Pievargas, the European Commission
Commissioner responsible for energy affairs, also said that this agreement
establishes a long-term and stable framework for the development of energy
companies from both parties and provides necessary guarantees for commercial
cooperation between the two parties in the energy field.
According to the European Commission's
prediction, in the next 30 years, the amount of cooperation between the EU and
Japan in the peaceful use of nuclear energy will reach tens of billions of
euros.
