The California government in the United
States declared a heat emergency in the state on the 24th, requiring government
departments, businesses and residents to strictly limit electricity consumption
in response to the high temperature weather that has lasted for 19 days and has
caused at least two deaths.
Mansour, CEO of the California Power Supply
Authority, said at a press conference held here that day that California’s
power supply has reached saturation. In addition to calling for conscious power
conservation, the government has also taken measures to charge electricity
bills by time, such as Increase electricity bills during peak electricity
consumption periods and reduce electricity bills during low electricity
consumption periods. He said that if the above measures fail to take effect,
the government will take compulsory measures to cut off power in different
regions.
High temperatures that lasted for several
days caused power outages in parts of Los Angeles on the 23rd, affecting more
than 140,000 homes and businesses. The medical department announced that in
addition to causing two deaths, the high temperature has also led to an
increase in patients and a sharp increase in the number of hospitalizations.
The California Meteorological Department
said that temperatures in California have recently broken historical records.
In the Stockton area, the temperature reached 115 degrees Fahrenheit (about 46
degrees Celsius) on the 23rd, breaking the record of 107 degrees Fahrenheit set
in 1960. The meteorological department predicts that high temperatures will
continue for some time due to the influence of warm, humid and high-pressure
airflow during the monsoon season.
Sustained high temperatures have also caused frequent wildfires in California and other western regions. So far, more than 100,000 hectares of mountain forest have been destroyed.
