Japan Government Increases Subsidies for Electric Car Buyers

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun website, the Japanese government will increase subsidies for electric vehicle buyers, which will be twice the current policy, with a maximum subsidy of 800,000 yen. This system will be implemented in 2021. The conditions for its implementation are that people need to convert their home or office electricity contracts to electricity generated by renewable energy and improve the charging equipment of electric vehicles.

The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will include relevant funds in the third supplementary budget of this year. The two departments have positioned the new system as one of the important policies to achieve the government's goal of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Currently, electric vehicle buyers in Japan can receive a maximum subsidy of 400,000 yen, but it is still very small compared with European countries where the maximum subsidy is around 1 million yen. Experts point out that this is the main reason why electric vehicles cannot be popularized.

According to the provisions of this new system, people must replace electricity generated by fossil fuels such as coal, which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), with electricity generated by renewable energy such as solar and wind power. The purpose is to use electricity generated by renewable energy to charge electric vehicles, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions to zero.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, the electricity cost of renewable energy is almost the same as the electricity cost of fossil fuels commonly used in ordinary households, and at most it is only 20% to 30% more expensive than ordinary electricity. The two departments hope to accelerate the popularization of electric vehicles and renewable energy electricity by introducing a new system.
