North Korea's "Rodong Sinmun",
"Korean People's Army" and "Youth Avant-garde" published a
joint editorial on the 1st, stating that they will create a new situation for
the peaceful reunification of the motherland in the spirit of "valuing the
nation, safeguarding peace and realizing unity".
The editorial pointed out that to value the
nation, we should put national interests first, never allow any external forces
and ideas to override national interests, and never succumb to any external
pressure or intimidation. Currently, the peace and stability of the Korean
peninsula are under serious threat due to the United States' stubborn
conspiracy to oppose North Korea and oppose reunification. Therefore, the
entire nation should bravely participate in the anti-war and peace-defending
movement, oppose the military pressure of the United States, and force the
United States to withdraw its troops from South Korea.
The editorial said that the
"North-South Joint Declaration" signed by the leaders of North and
South Korea in June 2000 was a symbol of opening up the road to national
prosperity. The entire nation, including overseas Chinese, must actively create
an atmosphere of reconciliation and unity under the banner of independent
unity, resolutely implement this declaration, and oppose all conspiracy
activities that attempt to stifle this declaration.
When talking about North Korea's domestic
situation, the editorial said that one of North Korea's important achievements
last year was that it "had nuclear deterrence" and thus had
"strong self-defense capabilities." The editorial stated that this
year North Korea will concentrate all the country's efforts to solve economic
problems. It must first make "episode-marking progress" in solving
the problem of feeding the people, vigorously develop light industry, increase
the production of consumer goods, and improve people's lives. The editorial
also emphasized that the country will continue to strengthen its national
defense capabilities to "defend the achievements of the revolution."
In recent years, North Korea has published
joint editorials from three mainstream media outlets on New Year's Day every
year, which is considered to be the guideline for North Korea's work throughout
the year.
