Statistics Netherlands says overall energy
consumption in the Netherlands will decrease in 2005, the first decrease since
1999.
Comprehensive foreign news reports on March
1, Statistics Netherlands said that the Netherlands' overall energy consumption
will decrease in 2005, which is the first decrease since 1999. The main reason
is that power plants reduce energy usage. In 2005, the Netherlands produced
less self-produced energy and imported more energy. At the same time, the
energy consumption of Dutch energy users increased throughout 2005.
In 2005, the use of fossil fuels for power
generation will decrease, with the use of natural gas falling by 6% and the use
of coal and coal products falling by 9%.
Decreased use of fossil fuels has led to a
decline in electricity production. Electricity fell by 2.5% in 2005. Net
imports of electricity increased by 19%, accounting for 1/5 of total energy
consumption by consumers. Electricity consumption by Dutch consumers has
increased at an average annual rate of 1.5% over the past five years.
